A thirty second check woven into your regular cleaning can be the difference between catching a problem early and facing months of difficult treatment later. Oral cancer often shows no pain and no obvious symptoms until it has already progressed, which is exactly why a screening built into your normal exam matters so much.

At Green Lake Cosmetic Dentistry, we build a full oral cancer screening into every periodic exam, not as an extra step tacked onto your visit but as a core part of how we care for you twice a year. Below, we walk through exactly what this screening covers, why certain areas get extra attention, and why catching anything early can change the entire course of treatment.

What We Check During a Head and Neck Exam

An oral cancer screening is really a head and neck exam, and it starts well before we ever look inside your mouth. We check your jaw joint, feel along your neck, and only then move to the tissues inside your mouth, since pathology can show up in any of these areas long before it becomes noticeable to you.

Every screening moves through the same sequence, and each step is looking for something specific:

  • TMJ joint: We feel through your jaw joint to check for pathology before it becomes a bigger problem.
  • Neck and lymph nodes: We feel along your neck and throat, checking for symmetry and any unusual swelling on one side.
  • Gingiva and lips: With your teeth together, we look closely at the tissue for anything that looks out of the ordinary.
  • Tongue: We wrap a small piece of gauze around your tongue so we can see every side clearly, since this is the most common place for oral cancer to develop.

This full sequence takes only a few minutes, but it gives us a complete picture of your oral, head, and neck health in one visit.

Why the Tongue Gets Extra Attention

Of everything we check, the tongue gets the most deliberate attention, and there is a good reason for that. It is the single most common site for oral cancer to develop, and much of it happens along the sides and underneath, areas that are easy to miss with a quick glance.

That is why we use gauze to gently hold and rotate your tongue during every screening. It lets us see the full surface, not just the parts that are visible when you stick your tongue out on your own, so nothing gets overlooked simply because it was hard to reach.

How Catching It Early Changes Everything

Oral cancer has one of the more difficult outlooks among cancers, largely because it tends to be found late. According to the National Cancer Institute’s SEER program, patients diagnosed while the disease is still confined to its original site have a five year relative survival rate near 89 percent, compared to roughly 36 percent once it has spread to distant areas of the body.

That gap is the entire reason we screen at every periodic exam rather than waiting for symptoms to appear. When something is caught early, treatment tends to be far less invasive. When it is caught late, patients are often facing extensive surgery, radiation, and in some cases the loss of teeth in the affected area.

Who Should Get Screened and How Often

Dr. Ellison performs a screening as part of every periodic exam, which for our regular patients means twice a year alongside routine cleanings. There is no separate appointment to book and no extra cost tacked onto your visit, since it is simply part of how we approach every checkup.

We have also found pathology worth following up on in patients who did not fit the typical risk profile for oral cancer, which is exactly why we do not reserve this exam only for higher risk patients. Everyone who sits in the chair gets the same thorough look, regardless of age, habits, or family history.
